Dirt Junkies 2015: Round 1 | Scarry compound

Dirt Junkies 2015: Round 1 | Scarry compound

Sunday 10th May saw the launch of the 2015 Dirt Junkies FMX series. This is the first year that the new freestyle motocross contest from England will run a full series with both amateur and pro rounds.

Round one was held at a private FMX park just outside London – the Scarry Compound. The amateur contest was open to all riders with some FMX experience, and saw riders from all over the country get together to throw down and compete for the £1000+ product prize purse! Strong winds tore through the compound all day, making conditions extra challenging, but everyone managed to keep riding and hang onto their bikes!

The contest saw ‘jam format’ qualifiers take place, with two riders out on the course at a time for a fun 15-minute session. Riders were then ranked, ready for the finals where each rider would put together a two-minute run around the open course. The FMX park at the Scarry Compound sports an awesome mix of both dirt and ramp hits with step-ups, transfers, 4-packs, hips and more.

Event organisers commented: “There are a lot of demos going on in the UK at the moment, but no other FMX contests for UK riders. We wanted to start a proper contest series that always runs on interesting, creative courses with a mix of dirt and ramp hits. This makes the Scarry Compound the perfect choice for us!”

Round one saw the addition of two newcomers to Dirt Junkies. Matt Coombs and Brody Knibbs were the two youngest riders in the field, and both put in confident and explosive runs which placed them in 4th and 3rd place respectively. Matt impressed everyone with his new Dead Body and Brody was stoked to get on the podium at his first ever FMX contest, and rightly so!

The fight for the top spot on the podium was convincingly won by Cornwall’s Wayne Jacobs. Wayne simply owned the course all weekend, throwing his first Up-Nacs over a ramp to berm transfer during practice, and managing to trick every jump out there with huge extensions and tons of style.

At the end of the contest, whilst the final scores were being tallied up, all the riders took to the course for the now traditional two-minute ‘Goon Off’. This is where a £60 on the spot cash prize is awarded to the rider with the best Ronnie Mac Goon Skills aka worst style! London’s Frank Carlton would have made Ronnie proud, and took the win for the second time in a row!

“We were so stoked with how the first event of 2015 went. All the boys rode sick and everyone is pumped up for round two next month! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the riders, the series partners (DC Shoes, Red Bull, FreestyleXtreme, Dickies) and of course the Scarry family for letting us use their facility. We really hope this series inspires more riders to get into FMX in the UK and gives the sport a big push in the right direction.” – Dirt Junkies Crew
